GREENVILLE —
TYLER – A Van Zandt County man has pleaded guilty to a federal charge of the illegal possessioon of a short barrel shotgun.
U.S. Attorney John M. Bales announced Michael Jack Callaway, 36, of Wills Pooint pleaded guilty Thursday before U.S. Magistrate Judith Guthrie to possessing an unregistered short barrel shotgun. A federal grand jury indicted Callaway for the offense on Nov. 7, 2012.
Callaway admitted that on Aug. 22, 2012, members of the Van Zandt County Drug Task Force found a short barrel shotgun among numerous rifles, pistols, and shotguns, as well as hundreds of rounds of ammunition, during the execution of a search warrant at his residence in Wills Point. Callaway must forfeit the seized weapons and ammunition to the United States Attorney’s Office and is facing up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. A sentencing hearing date has not been set.
The case was investigated by the Van Zandt County Drug Task Force and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
