Filing ends for elections

GREENVILLE — There will be an election in May to fill one seat on the Greenville City Council, while a new face will be taking over another Council spot.

There won’t be an election for the Greenville Independent School District board this spring, as incumbents will be returning to all three seats which were to be decided.

Filing ended Friday for the May 11 elections.

Places 1 and 2 on the City Council were to be on the ballot. Dan Perkins currently serves in Place 1 and Dr. Joe Perks serves in Place 2. Perks chose not to seek re-election to the Council.

Perkins and Tyson Cox filed for the Place 1 seat and James Evans was the only candidate to have filed for the Place 2 post.

Perkins and Tyson will be on the May 11 ballot, which will also include a Charter amendment election with 30 propositions and two bond packages; one calling for the reconstruction of nine local streets and the other for the construction of a new YMCA/event center project.

As he is unopposed, Evans will win the Place 2 seat by acclimation.

Places 1 and 6 and an unexpired term in Place 4 were to be decided in the Greenville ISD board election.

Current board president Anne Haynes serves in Place 1, while Slack Brown serves in Place 2. Both filed seeking re-election and both were unopposed.

Trudy Wineinger is filling an unexpired term in the Place 4 seat, which was also on the May 11 ballot. Wineinger filed seeking election to the post and was also unopposed.

April 11 is the last day to register to vote for the election, with early voting scheduled between April 29 and May 7.
