GREENVILLE —
The Greenville City Council intends to take action next week to amend last year’s city budget by more than a half-million dollars.
In a memo to the Council, Finance Director Cliff Copeland explained legal fees associated with the L-3 lawsuit, damage to a downtown parking garage and a higher-than-expected turnout for city sports programs were responsible for the excesses in the budget.
“In FY 2011-12, a number of decisions were made and actions taken that affected various funds in the City’s budget,” Copeland said. “The monetary impact of these decisions and actions cannot always be completely measured before September 30. Many times external information may come to light and cause Staff to make decisions that require a Fund’s budget to be changed for the financial health of the City.”
A public hearing will be conducted prior to the Council voting on the measure, as part of Tuesday’s regular session agenda starting at 6 p.m. in the Municipal Building, 2821 Washington Street. A work session is scheduled at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Copeland said legal fees associated with operations at Majors Field Municipal Airport exceeded last year’s budget by $503,645.
The City of Greenville and L-3 Communications Integrated Systems recently agreed to drop a lawsuit over a proposed replat of the airport.
Copeland noted the Exchange Properties Fund, which concerns the expenses at the Paul Mathews Exchange Building, would need to be amended by $10,578.
“Due to safety concerns, the exterior stones were removed from around the parking garage at the Exchange Building,” Copeland said.
A $16,380 budget amendment is also needed to the Recreations Activities Fund.
“The increased participation in youth and adult recreational activities and special events caused the cost to support these programs to exceeded the original budget,” Copeland said.
