Changes noted in immunizations at health department

GREENVILLE — Parents have only a few more days to obtain required immunizations for their children before the start of the fall semester.

“If they do not have their immunizations, then they can’t go back to school,” said Pam Andrews with the Hunt County Health Department, who also said there is a major change in place this year, which prevents the agency from administering the vaccines to any child patient covered by private insurance.

“Because of the change in our guidelines, we can only see children who are on Medicaid, CHIP or who have no insurance,” Andrews said.

The immunizations are available at low or no cost for those children who qualify through the Texas Vaccines For Children Program, Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

Andrews said children covered by private insurance will have to go to their doctor for immunizations.

“They can order the vaccines,” Andrews said.

Parents can also provide proof from their insurance company that their insurance will not pay for immunizations. All children must provide a completed immunization history prior to being seen and parents must accompany minors unless written permission is brought with an accompanying adult.

Those needing additional information or who wish to set up an appointment for an immunization can call the agency at 903-455-4433.
