Bells will be again ringing outside of local retailers this holiday season, asking shoppers to donate to efforts to help the less fortunate have a Merry Christmas.
The Salvation Army of Greenville began its annual Red Kettle fundraising drive Wednesday morning during a ceremony outside of Brookshires Food and Pharmacy, 6410 Wesley Street in Greenville.
Greenville Mayor Steve Reid and Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Sally Bird were designated to make the first donations to the campaign. However, Lt. Kenny Jones said some passersby beat them to it.
“They started dropping them in as soon as they saw it set up,” Jones said. “God is good.”
Friday’s event also included holiday music from Nathan Rimler and a display of a Salvation Army canteen.
The Salvation Army is also in need of volunteers to man the kettles and ring bells during the holidays.
Along with the annual effort to provide local families in need with toys, food and other items for the holiday season, the Salvation Army Angel Tree campaign attempts to match up volunteers who can supply extra special requests for specific young individuals.
