Not guilty plea heard in animal cruelty case

One of two teenagers from Quinlan, indicted on animal cruelty charges for allegedly beating a pot belly pig to death over the summer, has pleaded not guilty.

Jarred Lynn Ferrell also entered not guilty pleas to multiple indictments alleging he and Larry Glen Nichols stole copper from air conditioners.

Ferrell, 18, was arraigned Tuesday during a hearing in the 354th District Court on one indictment for cruelty to livestock animals and three indictments for theft of copper of the value of less than $20,000. Judge Richard A. Beacom accepted the pleas and scheduled a tentative trial date for February 11, 2013.

Nichols is scheduled to be arraigned on the charges on November 29.

The pair was arrested August 28. According to a statement from the Hunt County Sheriff’s Office, Hunt County Precinct 4 Constable Kent Layton notified investigators that there had been four pot-bellied pigs killed in the area of the 9900 block of County Road 3616. The animals had apparently been beaten and stabbed to death.  One of the four pigs was found dead in a pond on the property.

Ferrell and Nichols allegedly told Investigators that they were involved in the deaths of the pigs.

The indictments allege the defendants “intentionally and knowingly tortured a livestock animal.”

Ferrell and Nichols were also alleged to have stolen copper tubing, coils and parts belonging to three air conditioners on or about August 26.

The charges each carry a maximum punishment upon conviction of up to two years in a state jail and an optional fine of up to $10,000.
