GREENVILLE —
A local businessman died late Friday night after being hit by a car as he stood in the north frontage road of Interstate 30.
Kamal Ahmed “KC” Chowdhury of Greenville was the owner of at least two of the “Prime Stop” convenience stores.
Texas Department of Public Safety Corporal J.E. Simpson said his death should serve as a warning for anyone standing or walking along the highway.
“Stay out of the roadway at all costs,” Simpson said.
The accident was reported to have occurred at 10:20 p.m. Friday. The vehicle Chowdhury was driving was reported to have broken down on the north frontage road at about the 88 mile marker of westbound Interstate 30.
Simpson said a tow truck and a relative of Chowdhury’s arrived on the scene, with the relative’s vehicle also breaking down.
“He was standing next to the tow truck,” Simpson said. “He was wearing dark clothing and there are no lights on the roadway.”
Simpson said another vehicle passing by struck Chowdhury, “causing him to land in the roadway.”
Chowdhury was pronounced dead at the scene shortly before midnight Friday.
Chowdhury was the owner of Prime Stop No. 1 at 4414 Wesley Street, which in late 2008 became the first business in more than 100 years to be able to sell beer legally in Greenville.
Voters approved the sale of beer and wine in November of that year. Chowdhury had applied for his permit long before the election and on Dec. 4, 2008 became the first merchant approved for the sales since 1903. Chowdhury started selling beer and wine the next day at his Prime Stop No. 3 at 900 Wolfe City Drive.
