GREENVILLE —
“Demos Blasted by Ike In Michigan” announced a headline on the front page of the Greenville Evening Banner 60 years ago this week.
“ABOARD THE EISENHOWER SPECIAL (AP) — Dwight D. Eisenhower moved through Michigan today blasting the Democratic leadership in Washington to the thundering cheers of large crowds gathered at every stop.”
On the local scene were stories of an honor for a Banner staff member and a honey promotion.
— From the Here and There column: “This column knows of no one more deserving of the honor that came today to one of our colleagues, and because of that tribute we rejoice personally and know that our deep sense of satisfaction will be shared by the almost countless friends of Miss Ollie Coon, Women’s Editor of the Banner. This morning at the breakfast of the Business and Professional Women’s Clubs this very wonderful friend of ours and of so many others was named the ‘Outstanding Business Woman of the Year.’ It was the first time for the club to single out a member for that honor, and it was no surprise to us that Miss Ollie was the one chosen; in fact she has been an outstanding business woman in Greenville for many years.
“She is a charter member and the first president of the Business and Professional Women’s Club and now serves it as public relations chairman. She also devotes time and attention to Texas Federation of Women’s Clubs, the Women’s Home Demonstration Clubs, Parent-Teachers Association, American Red Cross and the Community Concerts Association, and helps along with just about everything in civic activities. We wonder sometimes how she manages to carry the heavy load that she does at her Banner office desk, and do so much for somebody else. But she does and loves it too. We’re proud of her.” (Editorial note: Miss Ollie worked at the Greenville Banner (and later the Herald-Banner) from 1908 to 1968. She was born in 1890, died in 1968 and is buried in Forest Park Cemetery.)
— “The most intensive promotional campaign ever conducted on a local or national scale for honey starts here today. This was announced by Lee Rice, member of the Texas Beekeepers Association, who will handle the local promotion. The honey industry and food handlers have the support of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Production and Marketing Administration in this campaign due to the importance of bees in the national economy. ‘Almost 50 farm crops depend on bees for pollination,’ Rice explained. ‘To keep the bees we have to sell the honey they produce.’ The honey campaign will run through October reaching a climax during National Honey Week beginning October 26. ‘It’s timed to coincide with the peak movement of the new crop of honey to market,’ Rice said.”
