Investigation opens into alleged beating of inmate

GREENVILLE — An internal investigation is reported to be underway into claims that employees of the Hunt County Jail beat a shackled suspect earlier this week.

Family members of Mickey Trent Reed of Lone Oak allege Reed was attacked by jailers as he was being transported from state district court back to the jail.

Hunt County Sheriff Randy Meeks said an internal investigation is underway to determine whether any criminal actions occurred.

Reed is also facing federal charges after he was indicted in connection with an alleged methamphetamine distribution ring operating in the Greenville area.

Reed appeared in the 196th District Court Tuesday morning for a pretrial hearing on an indictment for evading arrest. Judge Steve Tittle set trial on the charge as number one on the September 24 jury docket.
