NAACP to honor local leaders at banquet

GREENVILLE — Local business, government and spiritual leaders will be honored during Saturday’s NAACP Greenville Branch Freedom Fund banquet.

The event is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. at the Fletcher Warren Civic Center with theme of  “Aim to be superior and we will reach excellence!”

This year’s keynote speaker is Plano attorney and 5th Circuit Court of Appeals judicial candidate Tonya Holt, a former Assistant Attorney General and in-house counsel with more than 17 years of experience.

Those individuals who will be recognized by the NAACP Saturday include Newcomer/Pastor of the Year: Dr. Virgil B. Lockhart, President’s Community Activism: Jessie Barrett, Unity Builder: Dr. Roosevelt Broach, Health Advocacy: Mentoria B. Echols, Trail Blazer: Elder Wesley Pierce, Professional Achievement: Carolyn Traylor, Educator of the Year: Harold “Chip” Gregory, Businesswoman of the Year: Berdine Tarver,  Public Service: Emily Cozine Thompson:  Bridge Builder: Steve Alexander, Legacy: Rev R.L. Price and Volunteer of the Year: Thressa Young.

The NAACP Greenville Branch is celebrating its 27th anniversary of service to Hunt County.

Holt is also a member of the Texas Minority Counsel Program, JL Turner Legal Society Board, the Texas Women Lawyers and the Texas Minority Counsel Program. Holt was also the 2011 Corporate Counsel of the Year for both the Dallas Business Journal and the Texas Minority Counsel Program.
