Prison sentence issued in 2011 aggravated assault case

GREENVILLE — A local man, shot multiple time after he tried to run people over with a pickup truck, has been sentenced to prison.

Rickie Dewayne Miles, 40, of Greenville, was indicted in December 2011 on one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. During a hearing Thursday in the 354th District Court Miles pleaded guilty to the indictment and a separate charge of possession of a controlled substance. Under a plea bargain arrangement, Miles was sentenced to five years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice-Institutional Division.

Miles was alleged to have used a motor vehicle as a deadly weapon in the September 24, 2011 assault at a residence in far south Hunt County. Hunt County Sheriff Randy Meeks said Miles attempted to run over two people with a pickup truck allegedly stolen earlier that evening, before he was shot multiple times.

The sheriff’s office received a call of a shooting at an address on County Road 2323. Upon arrival, deputies found a male subject holding Miles at gunpoint. Miles had been shot two to three times with a handgun.

Meeks said Miles allegedly attempted to run over two male subjects at the residence with a Ford pickup, which was reported stolen out of Greenville. Meeks said officers with the Greenville Police Department were involved in a pursuit with the vehicle earlier in the day, but lost it on Interstate 30.
