Commissioners to hear plan to fix courthouse steps

GREENVILLE — The Hunt County Commissioners Court may vote next week on a plan to repair the north and south steps of the Hunt County Courthouse.

Though they are not being used at the present time, the steps have been the subject of discussion by the commissioners on multiple occasions earlier this year.

The commissioners are scheduled to hear a proposal from WE BUILD, a Harrison, Walker and Harper company, about a proposal to repair the steps. The measure is included as part of the agenda for Tuesday’s regular agenda, starting at 10 a.m. in the Auxiliary Courtroom, 2700 Johnson Street in Greenville.

In May, the commissioners voted to retain Safway Services of Dallas for the purpose of shoring up the bottom side of the stairs on the south side of the courthouse, after studies revealed there had been movement underneath the steps, which had resulted in the work being needed.

Since October 2006, only one entrance or exit is available to the public at the courthouse, on the ground floor doors on the north side.

The second floor doors on the north (Lee Street) and south (Washington Street) sides of the courthouse were closed for security reasons and are designated for emergency access only.
