GREENVILLE —
Ask anyone which local neighborhood displays the most red, white and blue for July 4 and, chances are, they will mention Park Street.
The stretch of Park between Stonewall Street and Moulton Avenue traditionally is decked out in more flags, banners, bunting and ribbons on Independence Day than anywhere else in town, as it hosts the larger of two annual local parades on the nation’s birthday.
But one Park Street resident felt there could be more.
Tim Kruse decided to add just a few flags this year.
“I put 100 up,” Kruse said. “Looking around, I noticed some houses didn’t have any. There were just some gaps.”
Kruse, who operates the Bubbles N Bones Pet Grooming Spa in Greenville, said he got the idea from watching a segment on the CBS Sunday Morning show.
“They had a little story about The Flagman,” Kruse said, referring to the story about Larry Eckhardt, who for years has traveled to soldiers' funerals in Illinois and surrounding states, providing flags along the path the soldier's body will travel.
So now, thanks to Kruse, Park Street has even more Stars and Stripes in place for the parade, to alongside the Star Spangled Banners which are posted by Greeenville’s Daybreak Rotary Club and residents along the parade route.
Kruse has lived on Park Street for almost six years and loves to watch the event.
“The last two years we have provided free hot dogs and lemonade,” he said.
He accepts donations, but not for himself.
“The first year we gave to the Park Street Historical Association,” Kruse said. “Last year we gave to Cause for Paws.”
People also want to thank Kruse monetarily for all of the new flags along Park Street, and he says he is not yet finished with his patriotic project.
“If I take any money it will go toward buying more flags,” Kruse said. “The more flags, the more it builds to a great holiday that everyone can remember.”
