Prison sentence issued in evading arrest cases, kidnapping charge dismissed

GREENVILLE — A Commerce man has been sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to two counts of evading arrest.

A charge of aggravated kidnapping, filed against Christopher Benard Alex in connection with an alleged domestic violence incident in October of last year, has been dismissed.

Alex entered guilty pleas to the evading arrest charges during a hearing Wednesday in the 196th District Court. Under a plea bargain arrangement, Alex was sentenced to 11 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice-Institutional Division on each count, with the sentences to run concurrently.

The aggravated kidnapping indictment was dismissed as part of the plea bargain arrangement.

According to information from the Commerce Police Department, shortly after 9 a.m. Oct. 13, 2011, officers responded to a domestic dispute call at an apartment complex in the 100 block of Maple Avenue.

Once at the location, an officer saw a woman being taken in a car away from the apartment complex by force. According to the officer, the woman was clearly distraught and was attempting to get the officer’s attention.

The officer told Alex to pull over but he drove away. Officers then began a search for the vehicle.

While officers were attempting to locate the vehicle, according to the report, Alex released the woman unharmed and left the car.

She was able to drive herself to the Commerce Police Department where officers made sure she and the infant with her were safe.

A manhunt was started to attempt to locate Alex and after a brief foot pursuit and a search of a wooded area he was taken into custody.
