GREENVILLE —
A proposed increase in the Hunt County property tax rate came under fire Thursday, as most of the people who addressed the Hunt County Commissioners Court said they were against the idea.
“There’s other fat to be cut before you go to the taxpayer.” said Terry Driggers during the first of two public hearings on the proposed 2012-2013 county budget and tax rate.
“We don’t have a lot of money in this county,” added John Kelso. “We’ve got to do something to get those costs down.”
Last week, the commissioners voted 3-1 to propose a two-cent increase in the county’s property tax rate, to be used to help pay for an across the board pay increase of $1,040 for each county employee, and to maintain the current level of county retirement and health benefits.
