GREENVILLE —
There is a chance of severe weather across North Texas, including Hunt County, today.
Damaging winds and even the potential for tornadoes were included in the Monday evening forecast issued by the National Weather Service, which means the City of Greenville’s emergency warning sirens could get a workout today.
There was a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms during the early morning hours, with a low overnight of around 66 degrees.
Showers and thunderstorms were predicted to be likely by this afternoon, with a high around 73 degrees.
A hazardous weather outlook indicated that the storms will form into a broken squall line, with bowing line segments as a dry line moves west to east across the area.
Damaging winds of between 60 and 70 mph will be possible, with a chance of brief tornadoes in the embedded supercell storms.
As of last week, five of the seven emergency warning sirens operated by the City of Greenville were reported to be in working order.
The sirens are located at:
— Graham Park, 800 Walnut Street
— Middleton Park, Spencer/Gibbons
— Wright Park, 5501 Highway 69 South
— Sports Park, 3901 Leo Hackney Boulevard
— Oak Creek Park, 10000 Aerobic Lane
— L-3 Communications, 10000 Jack Finney Boulevard (two sirens)
The outdoor sirens are designed to create an audible sound to alert people who are most likely outside of life threatening events, and are not designed to alert people in buildings or vehicles.
The city also uses the CodeRED system to warn citizens of major weather events. CodeRED is an automatic telephone notification system that can dial up to 60,000 numbers per hour.
