GREENVILLE —
The Greenville City Council intends to receive an update Tuesday on the effort to bring a new YMCA to town.
The council is scheduled to hear a report from Jerry Ransom, the chairman of the YMCA Committee, and Board of Development President/CEO Greg Sims during Tuesday’s work session, starting at 5 p.m. in the Municipal Building, 2821 Washington Street. The regular agenda is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
The Greenville YMCA building turned 50 last year and a fundraising campaign to build a new YMCA in Greenville was formally launched in June 2011.
The new facility is expected to cost about $8 million, with approximately half of the amount already raised or pledged. Plans call for the new YMCA to be build next to the Greenville SportsPark along Monty Stratton Parkway.
The YMCA committee has been charged with coming up with a projected cost and an income model.
Should the Council decide to conduct an election to approve the sale of bonds to help pay the facility, it has until March 1 to include a measure on the May municipal election ballot.
