GREENVILLE —
A Worthy Citizen will help lead off the Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade in Greenville.
Former Greenville Independent School District Superintendent William Smith will be the Grand Marshal for Saturday’s event.
Smith resigned in November 2005 after serving five years as Greenville’s first and so far only African-American superintendent, and after 35 years of service in the Greenville ISD.
Smith rose through the ranks to the main administration office. Smith also served as the district’s Assistant Superintendent for Administration, where he handled all matters related to personnel and human resources and previously was Assistant Superintendent for Operations.
He also served as assistant principal at the old Junior High, principal at Austin Elementary, principal at Greenville Middle School and a counselor/teacher at Greenville High School.
Smith received many local education and civic awards, including being named as the Greenville Worthy Citizen in 1996, the PTA Lion Heart Award, the Texas Life PTA Member Award and the Greenville ISD Key Communicator Award.
