GREENVILLE —
Officers with the Greenville Police Department had to shoot and kill a pit bull dog late Saturday night after the dog allegedly attacked another animal.
According to a release from the department, at approximately 11:18 p.m. Saturday officers responded to a report of a vicious dog call in the 3000 block of Wellington Street. The caller had said two pit bulls entered her property, killed her Australian Shepherd dog and left. The caller then reported the pit bull dogs returned and began to disturb the remains of the deceased dog. Officers arrived and neither dog could be dissuaded from the deceased animal.
One officer was reported to have fired one round from a 12-gauge shotgun striking the dog nearest him. The other pit bull dog fled when the shot was fired. The owner of the pit bull dogs was located and took custody of both the deceased pit bull dog and the one that ran away and was later located.
The owner of the pit bull dogs was issued a citation, and the animal control division was notified for a follow-up investigation.
