GREENVILLE —
The Greenville City Council intends to consider whether to approve a zoning change for a proposed “birthing center” in a residential neighborhood.
The Council is scheduled to conduct a public hearing before taking a final vote on the change from “single family” to “neighborhood services” for 2406 Church Street, as part of the agenda for Tuesday’s regular session, starting at 6 p.m. in the Municipal Building, 2821 Washington Street. A work session is also set for 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Audrey Stucker is requesting the change, to allow her to open a “birthing center” inside the residence. Birthing centers offer a low-cost alternative to a traditional hospital birth, especially for those without insurance.
According to a memo from Chief Building Official Steve Methven, a Neighborhood Services district focuses on smaller retail and office uses that integrate into residential areas such as medical clinics, art galleries and antique shops; uses which generally provide for retail or service transactions without burdening a neighborhood with excessive vehicular traffic.
As such, Methven said a change in zoning to “Neighborhood Services” was considered the best option for the Stucker.
The Planning and Zoning Commission voted 6-1 on February 18 to recommend approval of the zoning change to the Council.
