Enjoying 'Night Out'

Neighborhoods across Greenville joined with residents of three other Hunt County cities Tuesday in observing the Texas Edition of the National Night Out.

Heather Shutt organized an event outside of her home in the 1400 block of Alpine in far north Greenville.

“We are just wanting to get to know our neighbors,” Shutt said, adding that she and her husband had sent invitations to all 175 homes in the Reavilon community.

Several of their neighbors had taken them on the offer and spent the evening talking about how quiet the area is, where the best arrowheads could be found in a nearby creek and worries about mosquitoes. A handful of children spent their time munching on Doritos or making sidewalk chalk masterpieces.

“We’re all anxiously waiting on the fire truck,” Shutt said.

Firefighters, paramedics and police officers made the rounds of the six events which had been scheduled in Greenville, along with members of the Greenville City Council.

Council member Dr. Joe Perks sat down and enjoyed barbecue sandwiches with those attending the event at Kavanaugh United Methodist Church, while McGruff the Crime Dog made several stops alongside Crime Prevention Officer Chris McCaslin, who gave out a bunch of Hero Cards and stickers during a visit to the outing at Westview United Methodist Church.

“And, out back, for the first time, we have the Hunt County Sheriff’s Posse,” noted church member Angela Franklin.

Residents of the 100 block of Hackberry Drive enjoyed a hot dog cookout and the Villa Fontana neighborhood gathered at the fountain.

— The City of Caddo Mills hosted its Second Annual National Night Out at the Old Cotton Gin, the National Night Out in Commerce was observed at the Morris Recreation Center on the Texas A&M University-Commerce campus and the National Night Out in Lone Oak was held on the downtown square.

The National Night Out is sponsored each year by the National Association of Town Watch to encourage people in neighborhoods across the country to come together and get to know each other, while meeting with law enforcement authorities and learning ways how to prevent crime, drug abuse and violence in their communities.
