Council postpones tourism funding

GREENVILLE — It will be a little longer before more than a dozen agencies and organizations learn whether they will receive tourism funds from the City of Greenville.

The City Council was scheduled Tuesday to award hotel/motel tax revenue to those groups who were planning on bringing additional visitors to the city.

Instead, Mayor Steve Reid indicated the vote would be set for a later date.

“We are going to, based on city staff’s recommendation, send this back for further review,” Reid said.

The City of Greenville charges a tax of 7 percent on each night’s stay in a local hotel or motel room and then divides the money among the various groups which have applied for the funds.

The events they sponsor must enhance and promote tourism and the convention and hotel industry in Greenville.

The applications are reviewed by the Tourism and Convention Advisory Board, then the Board’s recommendations are presented to the Council.

The Board received 16 requests, asking for a total of $302,619 this year, with $270,000 in funding available.

The Board recommended the Council approve the requests, awarding $240,750.

City of Greenville Public Information Officer Lori Philyaw said Friday the requests were being given another once-over.

“The staff just had some questions on a couple of the applications and they are just needing some clarification on that before taking it back to the Council,” Philyaw said.

Organizers of the Lakota Ranch Pow Wow had sought $5,000, and the Tourism Board had recommended the event receive $3,000.

The Parks and Recreation Department was seeking $30,000, in order to host a variety of sports tournaments. The department is to receive $25,000 under the Board’s recommendations.

The Greenville Chamber of Commerce/Convention and Visitors Bureau is to receive $125,000, the Audie Murphy/American Cotton Museum will receive $35,000 and the Hunt County Fair Association is being awarded $10,000.

Some events, such as the Cotton Patch Classic Bike Ride, will be given an opportunity during the upcoming fiscal year to present their requests.
