Voter registration deadline approaching

Hunt County residents have about two more weeks left to make sure they are registered to vote for the November 6 general election contests.

There will be a lot more on some of the ballots.

Voters served by two area school districts will be choosing new board members, while citizens of one Hunt County city will be picking members of their city council on the same day as the general election.

Tuesday, October 9 is the final day to register to vote in the election.

Hunt County Elections Administrator Mina Cook said interest in the election has begun to grow among local voters.

“It’s been picking up,” Cook said. “We’ve had the college kids have some voter drives and they have turned in a couple hundred cards, so its been picking up a little bit.”

Residents served by the Boles and Cumby Independent School Districts will be voting for their boards of trustees, and voters in West Tawakoni will be casting ballots for their city council, on November 6.

The entities chose to move their elections this year from May to November, so as not to conflict with the rescheduled political party primary elections.

Of course, there are also the races on the general election ballot to consider that day.

The race to see who will become the President of the United States will be at the top of the ballot, along with the Texas Senate contest.

Hunt County voters will also get to help decide who will be the next U.S. Representative from House District 4. The contest is between incumbent US. Representative Ralph Hall (R-Rockwall), Democrat VaLinda Hathcox of Sulphur Springs, Libertarian Party candidate Thomas Griffing of Dallas and Independent candidate Timothy Williams of Sherman.

There will also be a race for Hunt County Commissioner Precinct 1 between Republican Eric Evans and Democrat Jerry Minter.

And Republican incumbent Constable for Precinct 1 Terry Jones will be facing Democrat Glenn Stone in November.

Early voting is scheduled between October 22 and November 2.
