GISD approves freeport exemptions for companies

GREENVILLE — After being passed by the Greenville City Council last week, the Greenville Independent School District Board of Trustees voted Tuesday to approve a freeport tax exemption for seven different Greenville companies.

“Communities that have passed the freeport exemption have had a growth,” GISD Superintendent Don Jefferies said. “To me, It’s a no-brainer.”

Under a freeport exemption, goods which are shipped either inside or outside the state within 175 days are exempt from taxation, but only if the goods are kept in a location which is not under the control of or owned by the manufacturer of the goods.

“This is a history setting move by the school district to support economic development that will help secure jobs and create businesses for the long run,” Greg Sims, chief executive officer for the Greenville Board of Development said. “This allows the school district and companies the same cometition needs that they need and will help attract new businesses and get us in a level playing field.”

Sims said a freeport exemption is one of the first things a company will look at before opening in a city.

“This is a big check mark for businesses looking to come over here,” he said. “This is very needed to keep our jobs and our tax base sound.”

This was the final board meeting for Randy Wineinger, vice president of the trustees. Wineinger stepped down to take the position of Hunt County Tax Assessor/Collector effective Jan. 1, 2013.

“It has been a pleasure to serve with this board over the past few years,” he said. “Serving the Greenville School District has been an honor.”

The board voted to appoint Trudy Wineinger to replace the District 4 seat until the May, 2013 elections.

Dr. Kim Butcher, District 3 trustee, was named vice president in Wineinger’s place.
