A former Hunt County constable, who allegedly shot two people in Rockwall Saturday night, killing one of the victims, was recovering Sunday from wounds he received in a shoot-out with law enforcement officers in Greenville.
The second of Lewis’ alleged victims was expected to survive the wounds he received in the incident, according to a report from the Rockwall Police Department.
Anthony Dewayne Lewis, 47, was listed Sunday afternoon in critical condition at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, where he had undergone surgery, according to Sgt. Aaron McGrew.
McGrew said Lewis had been charged with one count each of murder and attempted murder, with a total $1.5 million bond set.
“He will be under guard until he is released from Parkland and then will be transferred to the Rockwall County Detention Center,” McGrew said.
Jessica Aguilar, 33, of Rockwall was identified as the fatality, and Francisco Delacruz, 40, of Dallas was the second shooting victim.
“The male victim is in stable condition at Baylor Med Center in Dallas,” McGrew said. “All indications are he will surivive his wounds.”
Lewis will also likely be charged in connection with the gun battle which was reported on Interstate 30 near the Monty Stratton Parkway in Greenville, following a high speed pursuit.
Officers with the Rockwall County Police Department responded at around 8 p.m. Saturday to a report of a shooting at The Harbor in Rockwall and found two victims, a male and a female, who had been shot multiple times. Lewis fled the scene but was identified as Aguilar’s ex-boyfriend.
Lewis was chased by the DPS, the Rockwall Police Department and the Royse City Police Department to just west of the Monty Stratton Parkway, where he his car was spiked. Lewis was also reported to have rammed a DPS vehicle.
Lewis was alleged to have pointed a handgun and to have exchanged fire with the officers before being shot.
Aquilar later died at a local hospital.
The Rockwall shooting is under investigation by the Rockwall Police Department. The Hunt County shooting is under investigation by the Texas Rangers.
Lewis had previously served as Constable for Precinct 2, but was defeated in seeking reelection to the position during the May 2012 primary.
In a campaign announcement, Lewis said he had extensive law enforcement experience.
“Since 1986, I have been a dedicated Police Officer, Fireman/Paramedic, Police Sergeant, Deputy Constable and an Elected Constable,” Lewis said. “I have received over 3500 hours of in-service training which includes a Master Peace Officer Certificate, Intermediate Firefighter Certificate, Intermediate Aircraft Rescue Firefighter Certificate, Fire/Arson Certificate and Texas Department of Health Paramedic Certificate. I have over 250 hours of specialized training as an Advanced Tactical/Swat Officer along with being assigned to Dallas County’s Elite Special Response Team as its Tactical Medic.”
