Council to address bonds, lawsuit

GREENVILLE — The Greenville City Council is scheduled tonight to discuss potential bond proposals which could be included on the May municipal election ballot, as well as a lawsuit filed against the city concerning a drowning death last year.

The Council intends to meet in executive session on both items during the regular agenda, starting at 6 p.m. in the Municipal Building, 2821 Washington Street. A work session is also set for 5 p.m. today.

The Council is scheduled to convene under Section 551.071 (2) of the Local Government Code, which allows for a consultation with the City Attorney on any regular session agenda item requiring confidential, attorney/client advice necessitated by the deliberation or discussion of said items.

The items to be discussed include bond propositions;,the Ledaro Micky lawsuit and L-3 Integrated Systems.

The Council is considering adding an item to the May 11 municipal election ballot, asking for voter approval of almost $30 million in bonds to pay for 11 streets which city engineers believe need to be reconstructed, and two more which they feel should be built to help relieve mounting traffic problems. The Council may also include an estimated $15 million bond proposal for a new YMCA and event center on the same ballot.

The parents of a boy who drowned at a City of Greenville municipal reservoir last June have sued the city and the Greenville Electric Utility System (GEUS). Tireiger Micky and Echensia Hassan are suing for damages in the June 11, 2012 death of 3 year-old Ledaro Micky.

And representatives from the City of Greenville and L-3 Communications Integrated Systems are about to begin negotiations on a new lease agreement for the defense contractor at Majors Field Municipal Airport.

Should the Council decide to take any action on any of the items discussed in executive session, it would return to the regular meeting in order to do so.
