Attorney appointed for burglary suspect

GREENVILLE — An attorney has been appointed for a Commerce man, arrested last month in connection with a residential burglary in the city and a vehicle allegedly stolen out of Tarrant County.

Quincy Lamont Terrell, 19, remained in custody at the Hunt County Jail Friday morning, where he was being held in lieu of a total of $75,000 bond on a charge of theft of over $20,000 and under $100,000. Terrell had filed a writ of habeas corpus from the jail, seeking the appointment of an attorney, a reduction in his bond, or both.

During a Friday hearing in the 196th District Court, Judge Steve Tittle appointed an attorney for Terrell, but took no action on the defendant’s bond. No additional hearings were immediately scheduled.

According to a report from the Commerce Police Department, officers were dispatched on the afternoon of January 17 to the 1400 block of Caddo in reference to a home burglary, and were given information on a suspicious vehicle that had been seen in the area. A possible identification of the suspect was also given at that time and officers determined the vehicle had been reported stolen out of Grand Prairie.

Officers found the stolen vehicle in the parking lot of the McDonalds restaurant and also allegedly discovered Terrell playing with what was later determined to be a stolen I-Pad taken from the burglary on Caddo Street. All of the property except for the cash taken at the burglary was recovered out of the stolen vehicle. Terrell was arrested for the stolen vehicle and was brought to the Commerce Police Department where during interviews with Commerce detectives, Terrell allegedly admitted to burglarizing several vehicles at a local apartment complex on January 12. He also allegedly admitted to stealing a vehicle from the parking lot and taking it to Dallas where he wrecked the car and fled the scene. Terrell was also said to have admitted to burglarizing an apartment in Grand Prairie and stealing the car from there.

Additional charges were expected to be filed by both the Commerce and Grand Prairie Police Departments.
