Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to be honored in Greenville

GREENVILLE — The late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be remembered in Greenville next week with a full day of activities in his honor, including an inaugural 5K run/walk downtown.

The Corporation for Cultural Diversity of Greenville, Texas and the Greenville Branch of the NAACP is inviting all area churches, schools, civic and community group leaders to join in the 2013 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. birthday celebration on Saturday, January 19.

The events will begin with a 5K “Run Against Racism”, starting from Market Square at the intersection of Lee and Bois d’Arc Streets in downtown Greenville. Registration for the event will be conducted on site starting at 7 a.m., or online at www.inparksweplay.com. The event will begin at 8 a.m., and can be a race, a run or a walk, depending on the entrant. There is a $25 entry fee, with prizes to be awarded.

The Annual MLK Parade is scheduled to begin from Market Square at 10 a.m. that day, with staging one hour earlier.

Following the parade, at 11 a.m., there will be a program celebrating King at Municipal Auditorium, 2821 Washington Street in Greenville.
