GCS students attend camps around the nation

GREENVILLE — A trio of Greenville Christian School students were accepted to prestigious camps this summer, bringing back information from across the United States to Greenville.

Austin Bratton, a 10th grader at Greenville Christian School, was accepted into the “Summer STEM 2012” program at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.

This program selects students who excel both academically and beyond the classroom. STEM’s focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics through hands-on practical learning encourages participants to pursue a courses of study in engineering and technology throughout high school and college.

Austin is the son of Billy and Pamela Bratton of Cumby.

Alicia Guthrie, a junior at Greenville Christian School, has been accepted to the GeoX Exploration Summer Program through the College of Geosciences at Texas A&M-College Station. She is one of 21 out of 96 applicants selected.

A mix of classroom, campus and field trips, Guthrie will spend the week learning about geology, geophysics, atmospheric sciences, geography, oceanography and environmental programs. In part, she will visit a meandering river and measure its velocity and discharge; tour the Gulf Coast Repository; interpret data of select cores from the Gulf; be a part of a weather network by launching a weather balloon; tour the Eddie Gray Wetland Center in Baytown, Texas; view a demonstration of ground penetrating radar; visit BP-Westlake headquarters for an introduction to petroleum geology; and be a part of measuring electricity consumption and apply energy conservation and preservation methods.

GeoX is underwritten by BP, former students of Texas A&M, and the College of Geosciences. Alicia is the daughter of Deborah and George Guthrie of Greenville.

Ashley Wittmer, a senior at Greenville Christian School, has been admitted into the Stanford University High School Summer College in Stanford, Cali. Wittmer was selected due to her excellent academic record, proven leadership at school and extensive participation in community service.

During the eight week program, Wittmer will take nine credit hours that she selected from 125 course offerings across 30 different departments in the Schools of Humanities & Science, Earth Sciences and Engineering.

Ashley is the daughter of Steve and Ali Wittmer of Sulphur Springs.
