Parading into Christmas

GREENVILLE — Huge crowds turned out Friday night to catch a spectacular holiday event during the downtown Christmas parade.

Dozens of floats, marching groups, motorcycles, classic cars, equestrian entries and more  — lead by the grand marshal, 2011 Greenville Worthy Citizen Al Swanson —  wound their way along Lee, Wright and Washington streets during the parade, which lasted about an hour.

Lines of spectators, sometimes three and four deep, greeted the parade throughout the route.

The weather was likely a factor in the turnout, as temperatures stayed in the 60s throughout the evening.

Walkers who marched alongside the Hunt County Gives “Fill The Float” entry gathered bags of canned goods from many in the crowd, with the donations going to help those in need this Christmas.

The theme for the parade was “A Storybook Christmas”, with one of the entries capturing a bit of local nostalgia to win the grand marshal’s theme award.

Studio A Dance Company, with its “Polar Express” float, included portions of the former miniature train which used to run through Graham Park.

The engine and passenger car on the float were refurbished by Larry Davis.
