Local residents and businesses will soon be paying a little bit more to have their garbage hauled away.
The Greenville City Council is scheduled Tuesday to consider approving increases in the city’s solid waste collection and disposal fees. The vote is included under Tuesday’s regular session, starting at 6 p.m. in the Municipal Building, 2821 Washington Street. A work session is set at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
In a memo to the Council, Finance Director Cliff Copeland explained the city approved new waste collection and disposal contracts in 2008.
“In October 2011, the City was notified by both Progressive and Republic Services that the collection and disposal charges would increase 1.52 percent and 3.18 percent respectively based on Consumer Price Index (CPI) increases under the contracts,” Copeland said. “The City did not pass this increase on to the customers.”
Copeland said the city was notified again last month of another increase in collection and disposal charges, effective October 1, based on CPI increases in the contracts.
“The increase starting October 1 for collection is 2.38 percent and 1.64 percent for disposal charges,” Copeland said. “The 2012-13 Adopted Budget included these increases as a pass through from the vendors to the customer.”
The budget also included a passing along of the rises in the fees and charges based on the 2011 CPI increases, which means the total increases amount to 3.9 percent for collection and 4.82 percent for disposal.
