GREENVILLE —
A local woman has pleaded guilty to a charge of insurance fraud, for allegedly filing a false claim.
Tiffany Lewis, 22, of Greenville was indicted on the charge in May by the Hunt County grand jury. The charge was issued sealed, pending Lewis’ July 12 arrest.
Lewis entered the plea during a Wednesday hearing in the 196th District Court. Under a plea bargain arrangement, Lewis was placed on five years of deferred adjudication probation with a $1,000 fine.
According to the indictment, Lewis and another woman on or about Dec. 13, 2011 submitted a false claim to Nationwide Insurance, alleging Lewis had suffered injuries “as a result of slipping and falling in standing water.”
The amount of the alleged fraud was between $1,500 and $10,000.
The status of the charges against the other woman named in the indictment, if any, were not immediately available.
Deferred adjudication probation carries no finding of guilt, although those defendants who are found to have violated a deferred probation are subject to being sentenced to the maximum punishment.
Lewis was facing a maximum punishment upon conviction of up to two years in a state jail and an optional fine of up to $10,000.
