Capital murder public defenders considered

GREENVILLE — One local judge is urging the Hunt County Commissioners Court to approve joining other counties as part of a public defender’s office which specializes in death penalty capital murder cases.

“We save a ton of money on court-appointed attorney fees if we join this program, but we lose a ton of money if we don’t,” said Hunt County Court-At-Law Judge Andrew Bench, as he spoke in favor of the county becoming part of the West Texas Regional Public Defender’s Capital Defense Program.

Bench spoke during Tuesday’s Commissioners Court meeting and a vote to potentially participate in the program could come later this month.

The West Texas Regional Public Defender Office was established in 2007 through Interlocal agreements between the counties in the 7th and 9th judicial regions, with Lubbock County serving as the administrative county.
