Greenville ISD receives Meritorius Budget Award

GREENVILLE — For the third year in a row, Greenville Independent School District has been awarded the Meritorious Budget Award (MBA) from Association of School Business Officials (ASBO) International.

According to ASBO, the award is given to school districts that achieve excellence in their annual budget presentations.

During the district’s 2011-12 budget year, it was able to cut $1,700,000, per the 82nd Texas Legislature.

it cut $700,000 by continued staff reductions through attrition.

By keeping non-critical positions open for 30 days before replacement, the district was able to save $40,000. During that budget year, the district also received the Texas Literacy Initiative (TLI) grant to the tune of $7,000,000 to be used through 2016.

A total of $800,000 was cut in the 2012-13 budget year, where the district was awarded the MBA for the third year in a row.

The district did this, among other reductions, by claiming indirect costs on federal funds, garnering the district $120,000 in funds. By selling the T.A. Cotton Ford Stadium sponsorship, it was able to save $25,000 over the next three years.

When the district held an initiative to have students be instructed through iPads, the school was awarded a $100,000 technology grant for the iPads.

With all these cuts, the district was still able to lower its tax rate the lowest it’s been in 20 years.
