GREENVILLE —
The City of Greenville will be celebrating the 236th birthday of the United States today, with running, parades, music and, of course, lots of fireworks.
Anyone heading out to the see the big fireworks finale needs to be aware that one of the roads leading to and from a prime viewing location is closed for construction work.
— Activities get underway early this morning with the Firecracker 5K Run and 1K Fun Run. Sign-in and late registration begins at 6:30 a.m. and the run begins at 7:30 a.m. at the Aunt Char’s KidZone in the Greenville SportsPark 3601 Leo Hackney Boulevard. Registration fee is $10 for the 5K and free for the 1K run. Additional details are available at www.inparksweplay.com.
— Participants in the 17th annual Buena Vista/Chapman Fourth of July Parade will gather at 8:45 a.m. today. The parade, with Greenville Mayor Steve Reid serving as grand marshal, will begin at 9 a.m. at the intersection of Buena Vista Drive and Terrell Road. Following the Pledge of Allegiance, the parade will proceed north on Buena Vista, circle onto Chapman and turn south and then return to Buena Vista.
— The 16th annual Park Street July 4 Parade, presented by the Kavanaugh United Methodist Church Community Enrichment Series and the Park Street Historical Association, begins at 10 a.m. at the east end of Park Street and will proceed west to the Kavanaugh United Methodist Church, which will host the annual patriotic program. Organizers are asking for a minimal fee for political or commercial entrants in the parade. Additional information is available by calling 903-456-5908.
— The Greenville Patriotic Picnic begins at 5:30 p.m. today at the SportsPark. The free event will feature bounce houses and slides, a dunking booth, a pie eating contest, food and drink vendors, live music featuring Ryan Beaver and Jerry Petter and the largest fireworks display in Hunt County at dusk.
— The City of Greenmville is advising that traffic congestion is expected due to the popularity of the event. It is recommended that visitors arrive early for the best access to available parking. At the conclusion of the event, the Greenville Police Department will implement a traffic control plan to facilitate the most efficient exit possible from the venue. That plan will also have to include one less roadway. Monty Stratton Parkway, between Interstate 30 and Lions Lair Road, is closed due to the current construction.
