Deuell: State should have more health care control

GREENVILLE — State Senator Bob Deuell said he wants the federal govermnent to give Texas power.

“What we would like is the federal government to give us control of the Medicaid program because we think we can do it better,” he told the audience gathered Tuesday morning at the Fletcher Warren Civic Center for the Chamber of Commerce-sponsored “Wake Up to the Issues” Breakfast.

Deuell also said he would like to make changes to the Affordable Healthcare Act.

“I’m not sure if we can get rid of Obamacare,” he said. “But like a poorly built house we can shore it up to make it stronger.”

According to Deuell, something needs to be done about Texas’ water supply.

“If we don’t do something soon, we won’t have enough water in the future,” Deuell said. “We have to start addressing this issue.”

Deuell said the outlook is good for retiring teachers.

“We have enough money to pay our retired teachers until 2075,” he said. “And our comptroller gave us an estimate that we are going to have $5 billion more revenue than we were expecting.”

Deuell said the state needs to find revenue streams for building roads.

“We’re in pretty good financial shape,” he said. “But we need to find a revenue stream. We can’t borrow any more for roads or we’ll be in the same boat as the federal government.”

On the Tea Party movement, Deuell said it began the right way but has changed since then.

“The Tea Party is a good movement,” he said. “But I think it’s been hijacked by some people who want to cut the budget even more than we already have.”
