A leap into the art world

Frogs from Greenville company a big hit at Perot museum

GREENVILLE — Lyndon Stromberg, owner of Stromberg Architectural Products, Inc., has been commissioned by the likes of the Smithsonian and Ground Zero Museum during his more than 30 years of work, but he’s never built something quite like this.

Stromberg was contacted by the Perot Museum of Nature and Science in Dallas to sculpt six foot long glowing bullfrogs for the grand opening of the museum on Dec. 1.

“This was not the usual type of project we get,” he said. “They contacted us but they didn’t know what, but they wanted something unique.”

Stromberg said he tossed around different ideas with the museum before landing with frogs.

“We talked about snakes and frogs,” he said. “And we settled with frogs. Then they said could we make them light.”

According to Stromberg, his team didn’t know how they were going to make the frogs light up, but he said he knew they would figure out how.

“We had to use a transluscent resin and fiberglass,” he said. “Then we put LED lights inside of them.”

Since the grand opening, Stromberg said his frogs have given him press from unique sources.

“I got a call from a museum in Alaska that was interested in the glowing frogs and wanted us to do something like that,” he said. “He said it’s dark for months out of the year up there and it would be great for his museum.”

Stromberg said he enjoyed working on the project and was glad the museum entrusted his group.

“This was something fun,” he said. “I don’t know if they trusted us or couldn’t find anyone else crazy enough to do this.”
