Local retailers enjoyed merry Christmas sales

The City of Greenville received a belated, but certainly welcome, Christmas present this week.

Local merchants reported a huge boost in sales during December, setting a new record for the weeks leading up to the holiday season.

The Texas Comptroller’s Office reported Wednesday that sales tax rebate revenue for the City of Greenville rose sharply during the month and is also showing a significant gain for the fiscal year so far.

The city was to receive a sales tax rebate payment of $641,462,19 this month, representing an increase of 11.12 percent above the $577,233.64 received during February 2012 and also above the $617,842.82 received in February 2011.

The previous record for the month, $640,480.45, was set in February 2010.

The figures represent the city’s portion of sales taxes collected at Greenville businesses during December and which were reported to the Comptroller’s office in January.

Sales taxes are one of the two main sources of revenue, along with property taxes, which feed the city’s general fund. A rededication of a percentage of the sales tax revenue goes toward the 4A economic development corporation.

So far this fiscal year, the City of Greenville has received $1.150,495.39 in sales tax rebate revenue, representing an increase of 16.32 percent from the $989,023.05 collected one year ago.
