Doing some holiday good

GREENVILLE — The Salvation Army of Hunt County was able to help provide a Merry Christmas for more than 1,000 children this year through the Angel Tree program.

Hundreds of adults throughout the area also received assistance this season, thanks to those who claimed a name from one of the Angel Trees in town, or who dropped some spare change or maybe a dollar or two into a red kettle during the past few weeks.

Lt. Kenny Jones said there were hundreds of donors which made it possible for the Salvation Army to distribute toys and gifts at the Hunt County Fairgrounds December 20 to 400 families who had applied for assistance 90 days earlier. Those families included more than 1,100 children up to age 12 and also those children with special needs up to any age. More than 50 volunteers were involved with the distribution day event.

Jones gave special mention to volunteer coordinator Jane Wolfe, L-3, Innovation First, Trust Services of Greenville, the Greenville Fire-Rescue Department and the members of the United States Air Force stationed at L-3.

The agency also provided Christmas assistance for more than 400 seniors, including those homebound and in nursing homes around Greenville. More than 400 Christmas stockings were also given out to residents of nursing homes.

The Salvation Army of Hunt County also received $3,750 in gift cards, courtesy of the 12th Annual Kansas City Southern Holiday Express, which stopped in Greenville in late November.

Jones said the cards were in turn shared with various churches and organizations; including Community Seeds, Women In Need, Hunt County Kids, the Hope Center of Greenville, the Veterans Hospital in Bonham, the Community Health Service Agency, Bowie Middle School and more.
