Dealing with spectre of racism

GREENVILLE — The spectre of racism, and how it can be addressed on a local level, is the subject of a public meeting this evening.

“Dismantling Racism” is the theme of a program being presented by the Anti-Racism Team of the United Methodist Church and is co-sponsored by the Corporation for Cultural Diversity for Greenville and Wesley United Methodist Church.

The 90-minute seminar, which also deals with “Analyzing and Understanding Systematic Racism” is free and is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church, 5302 Business Highway 69 South in Greenville.

The meeting is designed to provide area residents a deeper understanding of the definition and exposure to the analysis of racism in the community.

Guest speakers for the event are William Jennings “Bill” Bryan III and Vickie Washington-Nance.

Bryan, the Director of the Intern Program and Professional Formation at Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University returned to the land his great-great-great-grandmother Daniel farmed in the 1840’s.

Washington-Nance is an actress and director and also a theater instructor in the Dallas Independent Schol District and is a producer for r.t.w.-reading the writers, a readers theater series showcasing black theater.

Washington-Nance has also volunteered for several community programs, including the Coalition for Education nor Incarcera-tion in the Dallas ISD and the Justice for John Wiley Price Committee.
