9/11 survivor to be guest speaker at Hope Center Banquet

GREENVILLE — A survivor of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Lt. Col. (Ret.) Brian Birdwell, is scheduled to be the guest speaker at the upcoming Hope Center Banquet.

“An Evening of Hope” is the theme for the event, set for 6 p.m. Oct. 13 at the Center, located inside the Family Life Center of First Baptist Church, 2615 Crockett Street in Greenville.

Birdwell, who lives in Granbury, is currently serving as State Senator Senate District 22.

On Sept. 11, 2001, Birdwell was serving as a military aide in the Pentagon and was critically wounded and severely burned after American Airlines Flight 77 was crashed into the building. Birdwell was awarded the Purple Heart for the injuries he sustained. After 39 separate surgeries and upon his retirement from the Army, Brian was awarded the Legion of Merit.

Since his election to the Texas Senate in June 2010, Birdwell has received critical acclaim from numerous conservative organizations.

Currently, he serves as the vice-chairman of the Higher Education committee, vice-chairman of the Veteran Affairs committee and is a member of the Economic Development and Government Organization committees.

In January 2012, he was appointed by Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst to the Sunset Advisory Commission and the Joint Interim Committee to Study Human Trafficking.

Birdwell and his wife of 25 years, Mel, operate Face the Fire Ministries, a non-profit assisting and encouraging critical burn survivors and wounded servicemen and women.

Birdwell will be introduced at the banquet by State Senator Bob Deuell of Greenville.

The meal for the banquet will be prepared by Chef Lucas Kiowski and the Culinary Class at Greenville High School. Donations will be taken for the meal, as well as for the work of the Hope Center.

Patriotic music will be provided by Jill Eng of Plano. Emcee for the program will be Dr. LaVelle Hendricks from Texas A&M University-Commerce.
