Tax ratification election today for Lone Oak ISD

LONE OAK — Voters are heading to the polls today to cast ballots in a tax ratification election for the Lone Oak Independent School District.

A total of 80 early votes have been cast in the election.

Voting is scheduled between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. today at the Lone Oak ISD Administration Building, 8162 Highway 69 South in Lone Oak.

The district is seeking a 13 cent increase in the property tax rate. The proposed rate of 1.496 per $100 valuation is also higher than the rollback rate of 1.367005 per $100 valuation. As such, the tax increase requires the approval of voters within the district to be adopted.

There will be no tax rate increase to property owners 65 years and over.

District officials have explained the district’s state funding levels per students have been held to 2006 levels, and over the prior two years the district has reduced staff positions by 25 people and campus supply budgets by approximately 30 percent.

Maintenance items had been postponed and updates to the district’s vehicle fleet had been deferred.

The tax increase, if approved by voters, would  restore approximately $600,000.00 to the district budget, and would add an estimated $13 per month to the average property tax bill in the district.

The funds would be used for infrastructure repairs and assisting in alleviating personnel shortages.
