GREENVILLE —
Greenville Christian School tuned up for its upcoming six-man football opener by outscoring Canyon Creek Christian Academy and getting outscored by Fannindel in scrimmages on Saturday at Eagle Field.
The Eagles, who are four-time Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools state champions, had a 5-3 edge over Canyon Creek in touchdowns. Fannindel outscored GCS 1-0 and 3-0 in two different sessions.
“I think we played as a team better than we have in a couple of years,” said David Wombaker, the Eagles’ new head coach and longtime assistant. “The kids like each other. The football knowledge is not where we need it to be. We found out if we can execute. We found out that we can move the ball so it’s all good.”
David Chandler scored on runs of 25 and eight yards against Canyon Creek of Richardson.
Will Martens ran 50 yards for one GCS touchdown and also threw 31 yards for a score to Andy Henderson.
Morgan Henry also ran 15 yards for a GCS touchdown.
Canyon Creek scored against the Eagles on runs of five and 10 yards and on a 50-yard pass.
Fannindel also outscored Canyon Creek 1-0 in another session.
“Our offensive line and our defensive line and these chump dogs in the middle did their job,” said Fannindel coach Randy Jones. “They played well. We’ve got a lot of things to work on but we’ve got a great foundation.”
Jarvis Wilburn passed 30 yards to Akyel Caesar for a 30-yard touchdown pass for the Falcons.
Bubba Lock also threw to E.J. Jones for a 5-yard touchdown and ran for two touchdowns.
Damonte Scott also ran for a touchdown and Chris Day scored on a reverse.
Fannindel will scrimmage again on Saturday against Savoy.
GCS will scrimmage again Saturday at home against Brenham Christian and Lucas Christian, starting at 11 a.m.
