GREENVILLE —   WYLIE — A Hail Mary pass for a touchdown with one second left in the first half helped the Wylie East Raiders claim a 42-17 football victory over the Greenville Lions on Friday night.

  The underdog Lions appeared to be headed to the locker room with a 17-14 halftime lead after playing their best half of the season but the Raiders reclaimed the momentum with Garrett McCain’s 49-yard touchdown pass to Marcell Ateman with 0:01 showing on the Wylie ISD Stadium clock. The Raiders, instead, went into the half leading 21-17.

  East scored three more touchdowns in the second half to up their season record to 5-2 and District 13-4A mark to 3-1.

  The Lions fell to 0-7 and 0-4 with their 27th straight loss despite holding the Metroplex’s No. 1 rated offense well under its season average. The Lion defense, led by linemen Shaquille Anderson and John Franklin, did something to the Raiders that Sherman’s defense couldn’t do the previous week: force East to punt. Sacks by Anderson and Franklin forced the Raiders to punt on their first possession.

But the Raiders got a break on Greenville’s first punt that went straight up and took a bad bounce, giving East the ball on the Greenville 29 following a 6-yard punt. It took the Raiders eight plays to make it to the goal line as Jabari Anderson ran in from the three for the touchdown.

  Greenville bounced right back from the 7-0 deficit with a 56-yard drive that followed a short squib kickoff by East. Quarterback Marquist Davis fired a 36-yard strike to Neftali Vargas and then kept for gains of 22 and 10 yards. Running back Tyler Matthews polished off the drive with a 5-yard run for Matthews’ first touchdown of the season. Kellen Cox’s kick tied it at 7-7 with 10:33 left in the second period.

  Trevor White set up Greenville’s next touchdown when he recovered a fumbled Raider pitch at the East 10-yard line. The Lions scored in three plays, including a 4-yard touchdown strike from Davis to Chance Hamilton. It was Hamilton’s second touchdown of the season. Cox’s kick gave the Lions a 14-7 lead with 9:15 left in the second quarter.

  East bounced back, marching 75 yards in four plays topped off by a 24-yard touchdown pass from McCain to Quan Jones. Dylan Cook’s kick tied it at 14-14.

Greenville then drove from its 30 to the East 21 as Davis dashed for gains of 25, 7 and 5 yards before the Raider defense finally dug in. Cox then booted a 39-yard field goal to give Greenville a 17-14 lead with 1:40 left before halftime.

  But the Raiders then drove 84 yards in seven plays, scoring on the Hail Mary pass.



Caddo Mills 34,

Howe 15

  CADDO MILLS — The Caddo Mills Foxes celebrated homecoming with a 34-15 victory over the Howe Bulldogs Friday night at the Ed Locker Fox Stadium. During halftime ceremonies, senior Paige Blakeley was announced as 2012 homecoming queen.

  The game was a tale of two different halves as Howe dominated play in the first half, holding Caddo Mills to only 46 total yards. Howe opened the scoring with a 28-yard field goal by Ryan Haines at the 4:23 mark of the first quarter.

  In the second quarter, Howe went on a 10-play drive, covering 81 yards, and scored with one second left before half. Haines connected with his big receiver Travis Jones on a 36-yard pass to put Howe up 9-0 at the half. Jones ended the night with nine receptions for 156 yards and one touchdown.

  The Foxes came out as a different team in the second half.

  On Howe’s first possession, Fox Dakota Monroe stepped in front of a Bulldog pass and returned the interception 56 yards down the visitor sideline for a touchdown, which closed the score to 9-6 when a run for two points failed.

  Howe responded behind the passing of Haines, who was 16-of-36 for 239 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions. The Bulldogs drove 74 yards to the Fox 2-yard line, where a fumbled snap was recovered in the end zone for a touchdown by sophomore tackle Keifer Rodgers. A pass for two failed, but Howe had extended its lead to 15-6.

  Caddo Mills then took over the game.



Wolfe City 22,

Celeste 21

CELESTE — The Wolfe City Wolves ran their record to 3-5 overall and 1-1 in District 8-A with a 22-21 victory over the Celeste Blue Devils on Friday night.

  Celeste fell to 3-5 overall and 0-2 in District 8-A following its second straight loss by a single point.

  After a scoreless first quarter of play between the two teams, Wolfe City’s Darrell Wooten broke free for a 36-yard touchdown run with 3:16 left in the second quarter. Justin Wilkinson kicked the extra point and it was 7-0 Wolves. Wooten carried 16 times for 126 yards.

  Wooten’s second touchdown of the night with 1:04 left in the third quarter extended the Wolves advantage to 14-0 as Wilkinson again drilled the PAT.

  Celeste mounted a comeback in the final quarter, as Braden Morrow completed a 36-yard pass to Scott Collida, putting the Blue Devils on the Wolfe City 13-yard line. After a Celeste penalty moved the football back to the 20-yard line, Traylon Phillips raced 20 yards for a touchdown and Morrow ran it in for the two-point conversion, cutting the Wolves’ advantage to six with 11:50 left in the game.

  Then Celeste tried an on-side kick that Ricky Lewis recovered, giving the Blue Devils the ball at the Wolfe City 44. Morrow completed passes of five and 18 yards to Bryce Kieffer and Tim Herman. Then, following runs by Collida and Herman, plus a Blue Devil penalty, Morrow fired a 23-yard touchdown pass to Justin Heuber with 9:28 left in the fourth and suddenly Celeste led 15-14 as Blake Garcia kicked the PAT.

  Wolfe City would not roll over on this night as Malik Gaffney completed a 14-yard pass to Cody Harbin, then completed a pass to Tim Lloyd putting the Wolves at the Blue Devil 12-yard line. After a Wolfe City penalty moved the football back to the Celeste 17, Wooten raced for 11 yards to give Wolfe City a first and goal on the Blue Devil 6-yard line. Then Wooten rambled in from six yards out and Gaffney ran in for the two points, giving Wolfe City a 22-15 lead with 6:18 left.

  After a couple of defensive stands by both teams, Celeste took on its own 20-yard line and Morrow completed a 39-yard strike to Kieffer to the Wolfe City 41. Morrow also fired a 10-yard pass to Heuber before throwing a 31-yard touchdown to Kieffer with 2:12 left in the football game making it 22-21 Wolfe City.

  Now Celeste faced a big decision, whether to kick the extra point or try for two. The Blue Devils tried the extra point kick that would have tied the game, but it was wide left.

  Celeste again tried an on-side kick, but this time Wolfe City recovered and then Gaffney kneeled three times to kill the clock as Celeste was out of timeouts.



Leonard 48,

Bells 0

  BELLS — The Leonard Tigers’ defense held Bells to 91 total yards of offense, while the Tigers offense put up 48 points, to give Leonard a convincing 48-0 win over the Panthers.

  Leonard opened the scoring with a 50-yard drive, which ended when Blake Hicks connected with Tyler “Turbo” Turner for a 30-yard touchdown pass. Ty McKinney’s kick gave Leonard a 7-0 lead.

Leonard next drove 66 yards, with Hicks stepping off the last five for a score. McKinney’s kick was true, and the Tigers led 14-0.

  Justin Bennett intercepted a Bells pass and ran it back to the Panther 35-yard line. Four plays later Hicks plunged in from one yard. McKinney’s kick split the uprights,  giving Leonard a 21-0 lead with 5:20 left in the half.

  Starting at their 37, the Tigers next drove to the Panther 12-yard line. Hicks then threw a 12-yard aerial to Turner for a score. McKinney’s kick gave the Tigers a 28-0 lead at the half.

  In the third period, Ryan Reid Nixon scored on runs of two yards and 18 yards, and McKinney converted his 13th straight on the season, improving Leonard’s lead to 42-0.

  Early in the fourth quarter Bells drove to the Leonard 30 but was stopped on downs.

Nixon, who ended the night with 102 yards on six carries, finalized the scoring with a 60-yard touchdown run with 8:31 left in the contest.

Dylan Monck and Richard Laster each contributed 60 yards rushing on four carries each.

  Turner had four receptions for 70 yards on the night.

  Leonard, 5-1-1, will host the Gunter Tigers next week for the probable District 7-2A championship.



Lone Oak 43,

Quitman 8

  LONE OAK — Defense provided the spark Lone Oak needed Friday night to get back into the win column.

  The Buffaloes defeated the Quitman Bulldogs 43-8, improving their district record to 2-1.

Defense was a factor early, with both teams trading punts through almost the entire first quarter.   Finally, at the 2:13 mark, Lone Oak sophomore Devin Shaw recovered a Bulldog fumble, setting the Buffs up on their own 22-yard line. Four plays later, Kyle Crow found Chawn Cooper on a 5-yard touchdown pass. Cody Hardin added the PAT.

  On its final drive of the half, Quitman managed to gain 41 yards, but with 54 seconds left, an errant snap got away from Joel Cameron. This time, Lone Oak senior Ty Tolleson, who was out last week with an ankle injury, picked up the loose ball and returned it 84 yards for the score. Hardin split the uprights again as time ran out, making the halftime score 14-0.

  After receiving the kickoff to start the second half, Crow led the Buffaloes on a 61-yard drive that ended with a 22-yard touchdown pass to Tolleson..

  On Quitman’s next possession, the Buffalo defense stepped up again when Ryan Basye picked off Cameron’s pass and returned it 50 yards to the Lone Oak 20-yard line. Crow then hit Kason Freelen on a 16-yard pass, setting himself up to score on the next play on a 4-yard keeper. Hardin nailed his fourth PAT in a row.

 Tolleson finished with 128 yards of total offense, two touchdowns, and led the defense with 11 tackles. Cody Melton added seven tackles and a sack.



Quinlan Ford 42,

Kaufman 40

  QUINLAN — In a tense shootout which determined who went 5-3 on the season, Quinlan Ford beat Kaufman 42-40 Friday night for homecoming.

  The excitement culminated in a key stop on the Lions — a deflected fourth-down pass attempt which Mason Welch made and Quinlan held on to win.

  Senior James Silkey paced the Panthers with 20 rushes for 115 yards and three rushing touchdowns.

  As a team, the Panthers amassed 371 yards on 51 rushes, including six for touchdowns.

Quinlan was first and last on the scoreboard for the night, beginning when John Humphries hit paydirt from nine yards out, and Taylor Sikorsky hit the first of his four point-after kicks, ultimately going 4-4 on kicks for the night.

S  ikorsky then made six points on a 2-yard plunge, and made good the PAT. He went on to rush 17 times for 165 yards, and it was his run into the end zone for a two-point conversion that pushed the Panthers ahead for the final 42-40.

 

Melissa 57,

Community 27

  MELISSA — Chris Smith threw for 333 yards and three touchdowns on a 15-of-19 effort as Melissa totalled 533 while defeating Nevada Community, 57-27, in District 12-3A play Friday night.

  Melissa improved to 5-2 overall and 1-0 in 12-3A, while Community slipped to 4-4 and 0-2.

 Community trailed 54-7 at halftime before Corey Rogers returned the second-half opening kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown to cut the deficit.

  Rogers also rushed for 149 yards on 16 carries and had 58 receiving yards on five catches, including a 29-yard scoring reception in the third quarter.



Pottsboro 21,

Commerce 18

  COMMERCE — In a match-up that could wind up determining the District 6-2A champion, the Commerce Tigers fell on homecoming to the Pottsboro Cardinals, 21-18.

  Senior receiver Buck Wilson was named homecoming king with Kaci Harrison named homecoming queen. A large Commerce crowd then prepared to see what promised to be a great game against the undefeated Pottsboro Cardinals. And for the first half, the Tiger faithful were well-rewarded.

  Commerce received the ball to start, but traded punts with the Cardinals. On the Tigers’ second possession, a great punt return by Wilson set up a 9-yard, fourth-down scoring pass from junior quarterback Sam Wells to sophomore receiver D’Lance Sharp. The point after missed and Commerce took a 6-0 lead with 3:39 left in the first quarter.

  The rest of the first half was a defensive battle, but Commerce scored with just 26 seconds left on a 7-yard pass to Wilson after Wilson had ripped off 43 yards on a fake punt run earlier in the drive. The two-point attempt failed, and it was 12-0 Commerce at halftime.

  In the second half, Pottsboro brought out starting quarterback Tanner Frye, who was rested in the first half. With that change, the momentum of the game changed.



Sherman 56,

Royse City 28

  SHERMAN — After a second half that saw both teams scoring 16 points, the Sherman Bearcats celebrated their homecoming on Friday with a 56-28 win over Royse City.

Sherman improved to 6-1 on the season and remaining in first place in District 13-4A at 4-0.

  Royse City is 1-6 on the year and 1-3 in district play.

  Sherman scored first when Dru Smith passed to Kiaron McKinney for a 30-yard touchdown. Austin Roan converted.

  The Bulldogs tied the score with 5:01 left in the first quarter when Jackson Watts capped a 75-yard drive with a 2-yard plunge into the end zone. Chase Selby’s kick mad it 7-7

  But it was a short-lived tie. Sherman’s Jordan Hume returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown.

  Sherman scored again Joseph Harvey caught a 69-yard touchdown pass from Smith with 1:48 left in the first period. The 6-1, 220-pound Harvey went on to set a Sherman school record for most touchdown receptions by a receiver, scoring on a 2-yard pass from Smith in the second quarter.

Sherman also had second quarter touchdowns from Tre Mask, from two yards out after a 75-yard drive, and a Smith to J.T. Luper 68-yard pass.



Detroit 27,

Cumby 12

  DETROIT — Detroit stayed undefeated for the football season with a 27-12 win over Cumby on Friday night.

  Cumby dropped to 3-5 for the season and 1-1 in district while Detroit improved to 8-0 and 2-0.

  Cumby quarterback Luke Sartin led the Trojans in rushing with 49 yards on 10 carries and was 9-of-17 passing for 89 yards, including a 3-yard touchdown to Cody Anderson.

  Anderson led the Cumby receivers with six catches for 55 yards. Dustin Heer (1-25), Brandon Jones (1-25), Jim Evans (1--2) and Colton Speights (1--3) also had catches.

Speights rushed for 14 yards on eight carries and Anderson finished with 17 yards on five carries.

  Brandon Jones sparked the Cumby defense with a fumble recovery and an interception returned 64 yards for a touchdown.

  Sartin also had an interception for Cumby, which faces a big game at home on Friday against Maud.
