The home basketball season is winding down for the Texas A&M University-Commerce women’s and men’s teams.
They’ll entertain Cameron University of Lawton, Okla. at 5 and 7 p.m. today and then will close out the home season on Wednesday with another Lone Star Conference doubleheader against West Texas A&M. The regular season finale is set for March 2 at Eastern New Mexico, followed by the LSC tournament at Allen on March 6-9.
A&M-Commerce’s 8-14 women can clinch a spot in the tournament with a victory over 5-19 Cameron. The Lions are tied with Eastern New Mexico for seventh place in the standings at 6-11. Cameron ranks 10th at 4-14. The top eight teams will advance to the tournament.
A&M-Commerce has lost five of its last six games, including a 70-62 decision to Midwestern State on Wednesday night in Wichita Falls. Breanna Harris led the Lions with another double-double, producing 18 points and 11 rebounds. Guard Danielle Dixon finished with 15 points, three assists and four steals.
Symone Brown led the Lions with 12 rebounds and La’Tisha Hearne pulled down 11 as they outrebounded Midwestern State 50-34.
Cameron snapped a nine-game losing streak with a 52-50 home win over Tarleton State on Wednesday night. Hannah Pollart sealed the victory for Cameron by sinking two free throws with eight seconds remaining. Lacy Reinke led the Ags with 14 points and Chelsea Stamp finished with 11.
A&M-Commerce’s 14-11 men are tied with Texas A&M-Kingsville and Eastern New Mexico for fifth place in the conference at 7-8. Cameron, which is 16-7 overall, ranks second with a 12-5 record.
The Lions lost their last game, 85-67, at Midwestern State on Wednesday. The Lions outshot the Mustangs .512 to .411 from the field but were outrebounded 49-23.
Devondrick Walker led the Lions with 17 points, while Stefon Carson added 11.
Cameron has won its last four games, including a 53-51 victory over Tarleton State. Kimric Dixon hit the game-winning 3-pointer with four seconds remaining.
Tim Johnson led the Aggies with 12 points, while Dixon and Asaad Robinson both finished with nine points.

No. 1 Pilot Point stops Commerce
Pilot Point’s Skylar Cagle showed why she’s one of the state’s top pitchers while leading the Lady Bearcats to a sweep over Commerce in a Class 2A regional semifinal softball series on Friday night.
Cagle struck out 22 batters in 14 innings as No. 1 state-ranked Pilot Point won 1-0 and 3-2 to advance to the regional finals. Cagle improved her season record to 23-0 as Pilot Point upped its team mark to 36-2.
Commerce finished the season with a 27-7 record after advancing the farthest in the playoffs in school history.

Commerce Lady Tigers to face No. 1 ranked team
Tonight the Commerce Lady Tigers will play Pilot Point, the No. 1 ranked softball team in the state.
But to Commerce Jeff Davidson, it’ll be just another game.
“It’s still another game,” he said. “It’s their best against our best.”
The Lady Tigers will face Pilot Point at 6 p.m. in Mount Pleasant at Northeast Texas Community College in the first game of a best-of-three Class 2A regional semifinal playoff series. Game two is set for 8:30 p.m. and if need be, game three is at 10 a.m. on Saturday. -
Northeast Texas Trail ride planned
The organizers of the new Northeast Texas Trail (NETT) have scheduled its inaugural event to introduce the multi-use trail to potential users.
On Saturday at 7 am, teams of cyclists and equestrians will begin separate relays from trailheads in New Boston and Farmersville. The meeting point will be Love Civic Center in Paris (2025 S. Collegiate Dr.). Estimated time of arrival is at 2:30 p.m. Golden spikes will be driven into the ground at various points along the route which was originally a railroad corridor. -

Buck Wilson of Commerce won gold and silver medals this weekend at the state meet while Rains pole vaulter Charlotte Brown won over a lot of hearts.

Dewayne Roach Jr. led all league bowlers for the past week at DB's Sports Grill & Bowling in Greenville with a 743 series in the Guys Night Out League. His top game with a 276.
Susan Shelton led the women with a 669 series in the Mixed Up Fun league. Her top game was a 243.
