Lions open district play at home
GREENVILLE — Greenville’s Lions will bring a four-game winning streak into their District 10-4A basketball opener at home tonight against the Royse City Bulldogs.
The freshman game is set to start at 5 p.m. at the Greenville Middle School gymnasium, with the junior varsity at 6 in the GHS gymnasium and the varsity game to follow.
The 5-9 Lions claimed their fourth straight win at home on Tuesday night against a Class 5A McKinney Boyd team that had been 11-2. Greenville led most of the way, building advantages of 15-12, 37-28 and 53-44 through the first three period.
Devonte Green pumped in 30 points and N.J. Mason added 11 for the Lions.
Royse City is 4-8 after falling 81-39 to Frisco Wakeland on Tuesday. Pierre Hayden led the Bulldogs with 23 points.
Greenville’s Lady Lions will take a 9-4 season record with them as they travel to Royse City to take on the Lady Bulldogs. Scheduled game times are at 6 and 7:30 for the junior varsity and varsity contests.
Greenville is 1-1 in district play after downing Highland Park 60-57 last Friday. Freshman Maddy Crabtree pumped in 23 points to lead the Lady Lions while senior Olivia Carter added 19.
Royse City’s Lady Bulldogs are also 1-1 including a 52-34 win last Friday over Richardson Pearce and a 59-41 loss last week to Rockwall.
Tayler Young led Royse City in both games, scoring 20 points against Pearce and 18 versus Rockwall. Maci Newton also added 11 against Pearce.
Many of the other area high school teams are also in action tonight.
Scheduled games include the Anna girls at Caddo Mills, the Caddo Mills boys at Leonard, the Lone Oak boys at Dallas Life, the Campbell girls at Cumby, the Bland girls at Sam Rayburn, the Bland boys at Farmersville and the Dodd City boys at Celeste.
The Campbell-Cumby girls matchup pits two teams that won tournament titles last weekend as Campbell took the Sulphur Bluff title and Cumby claimed the Fruitvale championship.
Campbell won its last game, 47-36 over Yantis. Katie Seale led the Lady Indians with 11 points.
Cumby dropped its last game to No. 16 state-ranked Martins Mill, 62-43 on Tuesday night. Savanah Neal paced the Lady Trojans with 15 points and Laura Oviedo added 11.
The Caddo Mills-Leonard game features the Fox players against their former basketball coach, Jeff Smith, who is now at Leonard. Joey Rhoden is the Foxes’ new basketball coach.
The Foxes are 5-5 after downing Community 47-36 on Tuesday night.
Leonard is 6-6 after whipping Sam Rayburn, 88-40.
