Celeste tournament begins today
CELESTE — The Caddo Mills Lady Foxes will be back to defend their title but the Celeste basketball tournament will crown a new boys team champion this weekend.
Caddo Mills, which downed Savoy 45-39 in last year’s finals, is one of eight teams entered in the girls division. The Lady Foxes will open the tournament at 9 a.m. today against Wolfe City. Caddo Mills won its District 13-2A opener, 28-26 over Alba-Golden on Tuesday night as Shelbie Welk led the Lady Foxes with 10 points.
Host Celeste, which beat Boles 34-31 on Tuesday night, opens the girls division at 6 tonight against Fannindel.
Other first-round games will pit Savoy against Sunnyvale at noon and Boles versus Miller Grove at 3 p.m.
Miller Grove’s No. 8 state-ranked Hornets will be the team to beat in the boys division since defending champion Sunnyvale is not entered. Miller Grove will face Muenster at 1:30 p.m.
Host Celeste, a 46-42 victor over Boles on Tuesday night, opens the tournament at 7:30 against Savoy. Allen Lyday led Celeste against Boles with 19 points and Cole Gilliam added 12.
Other first-round games boys games will pit Fannindel against Wolfe City at 10:30 a.m. and Boles vs. Farmersville at 4:30 p.m.
The tournament continues with the semifinals on Friday and the finals on Saturday. The girls championship game is set for 6 p.m. on Saturday with the boys finals to follow at 7:30.
Sunnyvale took last year’s boys title with a 59-45 victory over Trenton.
