Rains senior spiker signs with A&M-Commerce
EMORY — Though she excels at both basketball and volleyball, Rains senior Chelsee Hudson said her favorite sport is volleyball.
“You can’t explain why you like it so much but you do,” said Hudson.
Hudson likes the sport so much that the 5-10 hitter signed a letter of intent with Texas A&M; University-Commerce to play volleyball.
“Chelsee was our first 2010 athlete to commit,” said A&M-Commerce; coach Mark Pryor, who announced recently the signing of five recruits. “Chelsee has no idea how good she is going to be for this program. She jumps extremely well, and has a very high contact point when she attacks. When she picks up the speed of the game she is going to be a strong outside hitter for us.”
Hudson was a four-year starter for the Lady Wildcats, earning superlative honors on four all-district teams. She was the newcomer of the year on the All District 10-3A team in 2006, shared the most valuable hitter award with two players on the 10-3A team in 2007, was the 13-3A blocker of the year in 2008 and shared the offensive player of the year award for 13-3A in 2009. She’s also earned academic all-district honors.
Hudson led the Lady Wildcats in 2009 with 460 kills to go with 198 blocks, 474 digs and 59 service aces. Rains, coached by Kim Talkington, went 31-13 this past season, reaching the regional quarterfinals.
Hudson mentioned two reasons why she signed with the Lions.
“It’s close to home and coach Pryor’s a good coach,” she said.
Hudson attended one of Pryor’s volleyball camps.
“He makes you work,” she said.
Pryor is no doubt glad to be signing a player from the local area.
“It was really important to keep Chelsee close to home,” he said. “With student-athletes like Chelsee just down the road, we needed to get her here. I feel very lucky that we did.”
The Lions, who went 25-10 and reached the semifinals of the Lone Star Conference tournament, also signed Kayla Bond, a 6-0 hitter-middle blocker from Denton Ryan; Alyssa Hatton, a 5-11 outside hitter-middle blocker from Warren; Ciara Holmes, a 6-1 middle blocker from Terrell; and Jordan Neal, a 5-10 setter from Joshua.
“Overall, we are not done recruiting,” said Pryor. “Going into year three, it is going to be important to have major depth. That depth makes our practice gym extremely competitive.”
Hudson will be following in the footsteps of her mother, Charissa White, who played volleyball at East Texas Baptist University and was a state high school champion discus thrower in Arizona.
