A&M-Commerce men look to stay undefeated
Texas A&M; University-Commerce will put its undefeated basketball record on the line tonight in Kingsville when the Lions take on longtime rival Texas A&M-Kingsville.;
The Lone Star Conference crossover game tips off at 7 p.m. on the Hampton Inn Court. KETR-FM (88.9) will broadcast the game.
A&M-Commerce; is off to a 4-0 start after downing St. Edward’s (73-60), Trinity (67-58), St. Mary’s (73-59) and Langston, Okla. (105-82).
The last time the Lions opened the season with five straight victories was during the 1954-55 campaign, when what was then called East Texas State went on to capture the NAIA national championship.
A&M-Commerce;’s Cardell Hunter, a 6-2 senior from Dallas Carter, earned the LSC North Division player of the week award after scoring 14 points in each of the wins over Langston and St. Mary’s. Hunter also handed out a career-high 12 assists against Langston and finished with six assists and three steals versus St. Mary’s.
Ronnie Morgan, a 6-6 senior, leads the Lions in scoring at 14.8 points per game and is averaging 5.8 rebounds. Brian Singleton’s averaging 12.0 points, followed by Sherman product Brad Hambrick at 11.8 ppg, Hunter at 10.5, Sammy Jackson at 9.5 ppg and Greenville senior Justin Wilkerson at 8.3 points and 5.5 rebounds.
A&M-Kingsville; is 3-1 for the season, including wins of 70-58 over Texas A&M-International;, 81-69 over Texas Lutheran and 66-62 over St. Mary’s, plus a 73-72 loss to Incarnate Word.
Antwan Mullins, a 5-9 junior from Katy, leads the Javelinas at 14.5 points per game, while 6-3 senior Royce Gaye averages 14.3 and 6-5 senior Flavio Milam averages 10.5.
A&M-Commerce; is in the LSC’s North Division while A&M-Kingsville; is a member of the South Division.
