Callisburg ends Caddo Mills' playoff quest
DENTON — Caddo Mills ran into an outstanding Callisburg defense as the Wildcats knocked the Foxes out of the third round of the Class 2A playoffs on Friday night, 33-12.
Nathan Jeffery had two touchdowns for the night to run his career total to 136 touchdowns, tying the current state record.
Jeffery ran 32 times for 112 yards and one TD.
He was 2-of-15 passing for 27 yards and four interceptions.
Jeffery’s other touchdown was on a 90-yard kickoff return to end the first half.
Callisburg opened the game with a halfback pass on the third play for a 62-yard touchdown. Bobby Dorman added the PAT and the Wildcats were on top 7-0 with 10:25 left in the first quarter.
The Callisburg defense then stepped up and forced Caddo Mills backwards on its first possession. After a 43-yard punt by Jeffery and a 13-yard return, the Wildcats set up shop at Caddo Mills’ 38. Runs by Dorman and halfback Langston Jones gave them a third and four at the 11.
Dorman then found Jones in the left flat and the halfback walked into the end zone for Callisburg’s second TD of the night and a 13-0 lead.
Things got worse for the Foxes on their next possession as they lost two players to leg injuries, Austin Davidson and Jason Bair, and were forced to punt again.
This time Callisburg took 11 plays to go 80 yards for the next score highlighted by a 29-yard run by Jones on which he broke several tackles. That run put Callisburg up 20-0.
Callisburg stopped the next two Fox drives with interceptions, the last one with a minute remaining in the first half. Quarterback Dorman, who had 14 carries for 135 yards, broke off a 55-yard TD run to push the score to 26-0. Jeffery produced his third blocked extra point.
On the kickoff Davidson fielded the ball on the Foxes’ 10-yard line and gave it to Jeffery on the reverse. Jeffery found a seam and then hit the sidelines for a 90-yard return to close the score to 26-6 at halftime.
In the second half, Callisburg added another score when Jones got loose for a 43-yard run, making the score 33-6.
In the fourth quarter, Caddo Mills finally put together a 14-play drive topped off by a 27-yard run by Jeffery to make the final 33-12 when the try for two points failed.
Ryan Locke had an interception to run his season total to seven interceptions.
Jeffery had 15 tackles. Josh Crawford, Quintais Rector and Jacob Page added four tackles each for the Fox defense.
Caddo Mills finishes at 10-3.
Callisburg, now 11-2, advances to the Division II state quarterfinals to play McGregor, which knocked off Aubrey, 31-21.
